Postsecondary Pathways Curriculum

Get Ready's Postsecondary Pathways Curriculum (grades 6-8) is a research-based*, student-led exploration of personal and social identity, individual skills and interests, learning techniques for academic success, the world of career choices, and options for extending the education process beyond high school. It is modular in design, enabling students to linger on a topic, translating learning into action plans and helping students to develop a mindset oriented towards future readiness. All lessons are guided by three essential questions that students must answer for themselves:

  1. Who am I?
  2. What do I want?
  3. How do I get to (achieve) what I want?

Each lesson within the curriculum is 50 minutes in length, with each module containing 3-5 lessons. Each year, students move through 5 modules for a total of 20 to 25 lessons each year. The lessons are designed for a standard classroom size of up to 30 students, with implementation done by a classroom teacher. However, the Get Ready program fully expects that community organizations, after school programs and summer enrichment programs will utilize the curriculum as well. In that case, youth workers are given the tools to deliver the program with efficacy.

Included with the curriculum are evaluation resources including student surveys, rubrics for monitoring student work and progress, and train the trainer services to ensure teachers are implementing curriculum as intended. Built into the curriculum are student created projects to reinforce the concepts of identity and career development central to this curriculum.

* The curriculum has been developed from a research-based approach using well respected sources such as The American School Counselors Association's National Model of Career Development Standards, Daphna Oyserman's theoretical work around identity-based motivation, Search Institute's work around connecting student interests to the school setting and Facing History and Ourselves, a teacher-led website devoted to connecting students to the world around them.
