International Students in Minnesota
According to the Institute of International Education Open Doors 2016 report, 14,943 students from outside the U.S. attended Minnesota institutions during the academic year 2015-2016. This number was up 3.5 percent from the previous year. Minnesota ranked 19th out of all states in the number of international students attending postsecondary institutions in the state, unchanged from previous two years.
Of 2015-2016 international students attending a Minnesota institution:
- With 7,037 international students, the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities ranked 20th of all leading postsecondary institutions in the country hosting international students.
- China was the leading country of origin for international students in Minnesota. The Chinese student population in Minnesota comprises 29.4 percent of all international students in the state. India and South Korea were the next two leading countries of origin of international students in the state followed by Saudi Arabia and Nepal.
- Five Minnesota institutions accounted for 71 percent of international students studying in Minnesota.
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, international students contributed $36 billion to the U.S. economy in 2015-2016. Within Minnesota, international students contributed over $418 million to the economy.
