Minnesota's need-based grant program for undergraduates


 

The Minnesota State Grant Program is the state's largest financial aid program providing need-based grant assistance to Minnesota resident undergraduates attending public and private postsecondary institutions in Minnesota. During Fiscal Year 2023, the Minnesota State Grant Program awarded $214 million to 67,584 grant recipients. See Minnesota statute and administrative rules governing the program.

Average Combined Federal Pell and Minnesota State Grant Award Received by State Grant Recipients, Fiscal Year 2023

State grant recipients with Family Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of less than $10,000 received $6,700; AGI of $10,000 to $19,999 received $6,460; AGI of $20,000 to $29,999 received $6,240; AGI of $30,000 to $39,999 received $6,200; AGI of $40,000 to $49,999 received $6,360;  AGI of $50,000 to $59,999 received $5,970; AGI of $60,000 to $69,999 received $5,430; AGI of $70,000 to $79,999 received $4,630; AGI of $80,000 to $89,999 received $4,090; $90,000 to $99,999 received $3,500; $100,000 or more received $2,900.

State Grant and Federal Pell Grant Spending Trends

The Minnesota State Grant columns are the number of Minnesota resident undergraduates receiving a state grant along with the total dollars awarded. The Federal Pell Grant columns are the number of undergraduates attending Minnesota institutions receiving a Pell Grant and total Pell Grant dollars awarded.

Note: The Minnesota State Grant Program received its first state appropriation in 1984. A Minnesota Scholarship program existed is prior years.
