Excellence in Composition

This scholarship is presented to an incoming Composition & Songwriting student. This award is intended to recognize outstanding ability demonstrated by a student in composition and songwriting.

Award Amount: 10 percent - 25 percent of tuition each semester

Founders

The Founders Scholarship is a scholarship program for McNally Smith Colleges highest financial need applicants. Scholarship criteria include undergraduate students only without a prior bachelor degree. The student must have remaining financial need to cover anticipated tuition and fees after any federal, state, school, or private grant and scholarship funding.

Award Amount: $2,000 - $4,000

Premier Scholarship Music Composition

The Music Composition and Songwriting Scholarship is presented to an incoming or current McNally Smith College of Music Composition & Songwriting student each academic year. Please send three songs, pieces, or excerpts. These work samples will be evaluated based upon content rather than production value. All demos must be clearly labeled with your name and major. If submitting songs, please include lyric sheets as Microsoft Word documents or printed out. Applicants may submit written scores or lead sheets as well, but only in addition to an audio recording of the music that you are submitting.

Award Amount: 25 percent - 50 percent of tuition each semester

Ben Sidran Award for Excellence in Music Production

This scholarship is presented to an incoming Music Production student. A pianist, producer, singer and composer, Ben Sidran has recorded twenty-five solo albums and has produced recordings for such noted artists as Van Morrison, Diana Ross, Mose Allison and Jon Hendricks. Sidran was a Distinguished Visiting Artist at McNally Smith in 2003.

Premier Scholarship Hip-Hop

The Hip-Hop Scholarship is presented to an incoming or current McNally Smith College of Music Hip-Hop Studies student each academic year. Applicants must submit two demo recordings that they have produced, arranged, or recorded. The two pieces should be selected for their stylistic contrast, musical interest and technical or creative expression. The combined length of the demo recordings is not to exceed four minutes. Applicants must also describe their individual participation for each of the recordings. Submissions without a precise description of personal involvement will be excluded.

Award Amount: 25 percent - 50 percent of tuition each semester
Renewable? Yes, for up to 3 semesters with a minimum GPA of 3.0 each semester.

Chris Coleman Award for Excellence in Brass & Woodwind

This scholarship is presented to an incoming Brass & Woodwind student. A member of the Saint Paul City Council from 1997 to 2003, Chris Coleman is the current Mayor of Saint Paul and an outspoken advocate for the arts and arts education. Chris was instrumental in bringing McNally Smith to Saint Paul in 2004.

Conclave Music Business Scholarship

This scholarship is presented to an incoming or current McNally Smith College of Music business student each academic year. The scholarship winner will receive the award at the annual Conclave Learning Conference in July. The winner is encouraged to attend The Conclave and will receive a stipend to help cover travel and lodging expenses. The Conclave will provide complimentary tuition to attend the weekend Learning Conference. Since 1979, the non-profit Conclave  in keeping with its mission of educating the music industry  has been awarding scholarships to deserving students desiring an education in the radio and music industries.

Award Amount: 25 percent - 50 percent of tuition each semester

Debbie Duncan Award for Excellence in Voice

This scholarship is presented to an incoming Voice student. One of the countrys most respected jazz vocalists, Debbie Duncan moved to Minneapolis after ten years of working the Los Angeles nightclub circuit. She has received numerous Minnesota Music Awards and was the first recipient of the Perpetually Outstanding Performer award. Debbie is a faculty member at McNally Smith.

Premier Scholarship Music Performance

This scholarship is presented to an incoming or current McNally Smith College of Music Bachelor of Music Performance student each academic year. In addition to completing the online application, applicants must also include two video demo excerpts, the combined length of which is not to exceed four minutes. The two selections must be in contrasting styles that demonstrate musical strengths and versatility. Accompaniment is suggested.

Marv Dahlgren Award for Excellence in Percussion

This scholarship is presented to an incoming Percussion student. A nationally known figure in the drumming world, Marv Dahlgren was the principal percussionist and assistant timpanist for the Minnesota Orchestra, an original faculty member in the McNally Smith Percussion department and continues to teach at the college.

Mike Elliott Award for Excellence in Guitar

This scholarship is presented to an incoming Guitar student. Mike Elliott, a versatile, highly accomplished guitarist revered for his work in both jazz and country music, was a much- loved instructor at McNally Smith College of Music. His extensive music career included performances with the Toronto Symphony and recordings with Johnny Cash. Mike taught countless students from beginners to Béla Fleck. He passed away at his home in Saint Paul in 2005.

Mike Watt Award for Excellence in Bass

This scholarship is presented to an incoming Bass student. Mike Watt is a founding member of fIREHOSE, a popular band on American college campuses in the 990s. Touring and recording almost nonstop, Watt has worked with J. Mascis, The Stooges and others on numerous ongoing projects.

Presidential Scholarships

Presidential Scholarships are full or partial tuition grants awarded to students identified and nominated by McNally Smith faculty. Students who are awarded Presidential Scholarships will be of the highest level of musical potential and possess a solid academic record. Students themselves may not apply for Presidential Scholarships and must be strongly recommended by a Department Head, Division Chair, or the Dean of Academic Affairs. These awards may go to students in any major area.

Award Amount: Varies, generally 50 percent of tuition each semester

Returning Student Awards

All returning second, third and fourth year students are eligible for a scholarship award. No application is necessary as these awards are solely based on the cumulative GPA of at least two completed semesters. These scholarships are only awarded to full-time students who are not already receiving a McNally Smith sponsored scholarship.
