MN GI Bill Program Application Instructions
Step 1 - Student completes the application once each year. The application must be accompanied with the appropriate documentation the first time the student applies for MN GI Bill benefits at an institution. All students must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Step 2 - Postsecondary institution determines the MN GI Bill benefit and notifies student of the award for that term.
Step 3 - If any of the Federal veteran's benefits reported on the application change, the applicant must notify the institution.
The MN GI Bill award is calculated by subtracting the student's Federal Pell Grant, MN State Grant and other Federal veteran's benefits from the calculation budget. The maximum GI Bill award for an undergraduate student registered for 12 credits or more (and graduate students enrolled full time per the institution) is $1,000 per term. The maximum GI Bill award for an undergraduate student registered for 11 credits or less (and graduate students enrolled part time per the institution) is $500 per term. The maximum GI Bill award per fiscal year - July 1 through June 30 is $3,000, up to a lifetime maximum benefit of $10,000. The amount of the budget used to calculate will be reduced according to the number of credits for which the student is registered.
