Goals

JCSP’s artistic goals are to: 1) nurture student growth in creativity and skill as a composer/songwriter; 2) promote music literacy through teaching of music notation, theory, ear-training, and performance; 3) develop connections between students and the larger professional community of composers/songwriters and musicians; 4) recognize student accomplishments; 5) attract and inspire audiences. Our energies are primarily directed on the process of learning how to create music, clearly notate music, and direct its performance.

Activities

To achieve these goals, students will be given: • Space and time for composing and performing their new musical works • Daily theory classes with ear training (2 hours) to enhance knowledge of music theory and composition • Tutelage by guest artists that fosters the writing process as they sketch musical ideas together • Workshops with guest artists that enhance conceptual and aural literacy • Three or more Private lessons with renowned faculty that encourage growth in creativity and musical form • Final salons and audio documentation where students are recognized as performers and creators • Partnerships with composers-in-residence and professional performing artists who give readings • Engaged audiences who observe and appreciate the creative process • Instruction on use of notation software that puts their ideas into written form, laptops to borrow if necessary • Public performances that bring their new music to the ears of the world. Recordings provided of performances later.
