Goals

Introduce students to skills used to create enameled pieces, including color mixing, application methods, firing, and finishing. Students also practice spatial thinking, weights and measurements, and creative problem solving.

Activities

Enameling is like painting with glass! In this camp, we'll explore ancient and modern techniques of applying enamel glass to copper and steel. The process starts with glass powder mixed with pigment and a liquid medium. You'll use methods like sifting, painting, stenciling, and more to apply the enamel to metal. Then, we'll fire your piece at high heat, which melts the glass onto the surface and makes it very hard and durable. We’ll cover safety protocols and explore tools and techniques as we move from enameling copper to steel and even create our own one-of-a-kind camping mugs!
